Intercultural Development Inventory® is dedicated to fostering personal growth, insight, and societal transformation by enhancing individuals' intercultural competence and promoting effective cross-cultural interactions.

Their main products are an application of the IDI® assessment test and reports, Offer Seminars, and the training and support of IDI Qualified Administrators.

Project Goal

IDI was looking for a comprehensive redesign of their marketing website that delivered informative content about their diverse range of products. The aim of the redesign was to provide a deeper understanding of their offerings, foundational principles, and ideas.

Our team optimized the accessibility and overall user experience of the IDI website. With the company's mission of facilitating personal and collective growth by nurturing intercultural competency and fostering meaningful connections across cultural boundaries, the IDI team felt it was important that their website reflected this goal.

Approach

We followed an agile methodology, with an initial UX Analysis, followed by a Research Phase, Design Phase, Development Phase, and Validation Phase.

Communication with the project stakeholders was crucial to our process, we checked in with their team through bi-weekly meetings. We collaborated closely with IDI’s internal team of project managers and designers. This effort involved receiving critical feedback on the designs and ensuring that all product requirements were met.

Upon project completion, documentation for the hand-off was created on Notion with details, tickets, and links to all the activities and exercises involved throughout the product design process. Design-specification documents were also provided for the new custom components created for a seamless development transition and the ability for the client to scale our designs in the future.

Solution

Simplified Navigation

One of the primary challenges addressed in this project was reorganizing and simplifying the website’s navigation. Previously, the navigation bar had an excessive amount of pages so we introduced a drop-down solution that helped reduce this number and provided logical content groupings. Additionally, we added different helpful links in the footer of the website so users did not have to search through the entire website before finding what they needed.

Another navigational challenge we tackled pertained to the Call-to-Action (CTA) Buttons. Initially plagued by both wordiness and confusing industry jargon, the CTAs on the website were also positioned too frequently, presenting challenges for first-time users. Our solution involved simplifying the CTAs' language, making them more user-friendly, and capitalizing on their strategic placement. Additionally, to strike a balance between providing valuable information, maintaining a visually engaging interface, and ensuring a sizable click space, we strategically incorporated icons into specific CTA buttons. This comprehensive approach successfully streamlined user navigation and enhanced their overall journey by addressing both content and placement issues.

Guided Experience

Previously, the IDI users struggled with vague instructions, user groups, and were unsure how they could get value from IDI. These questions created an over-utilized contact form. Our team enhanced the experience on the homepage with step-by-step instructions and videos. Additionally, we rebuilt their help center in a widget that stays in the same spot across the website regardless of where you scroll.

Our solution introduced instructions on the homepage in a highly visible design, while consolidating the information to not overload users. To explain the complexities of IDI’s testing platform, videos were provided to benefit visual learners, share impact, and break down the algorithm used in their assessment. The IDI team wanted their help center to become more prominent and automated, their contact form was constantly creating new ticket items from users who did not understand where they fell in IDI’s process and required a substantial amount of effort from the IDI team to respond to all inquiries. By creating a sticky widget with a search bar leading to top FAQs, users can quickly find answers to their questions, better understand their role in relationship to IDI, and rely less on the contact form.

Qualified Expert Finder

One of the cornerstones of the IDI website redesign was the creation of a powerful and user-friendly searchable QA database, designed to facilitate the identification and engagement of Qualified Administrators (QAs). Through this web experience, individuals or companies can easily locate a QA capable of hosting a Qualifying Seminar (QS) and administering the IDI test. The database includes a robust filtering system, allowing for specific searches based on keywords, session modalities (in-person/virtual), types of organizations served, offered services, and languages spoken.

This innovative tool not only benefits clients seeking QAs but also proves invaluable for IDI itself. The database enables IDI to effortlessly manage and keep track of all its QAs. Importantly, the system operates efficiently because QAs autonomously update their own information and maintain control over their profiles. Originally beyond the project scope, this now essential feature has effectively streamlined processes for both IDI and its Qualified Administrators, enhancing the overall client experience.
